The phatbox uses digital signatures all over the place -- to authenticate

  1. the DMS drive
  2. firmware images for the 8051
  3. pld images for the Xilinx chip
  4. executables
  5. playlists

Not much is known about these signatures, other than they are generated using an 1024-bit RSA key and are of variable length. (They probably also use a hash function such as MD5 or SHA-1, but it is unclear.

Here is what little can be said about their format:

struct signature {
  unsigned long int length; // in bits
  unsigned char data[]; // variable length
}
